We all know the song, The 12 Days of Christmas where a gentleman gives his lady friend 12 gifts, each growing increasingly more extravagant as the song ends. With only 12 shopping days left until Christmas, Bethel Buzz is sharing 12 ideas for great gifts that you can buy locally.

As has been our mission since we launched our website, Bethel Buzz supports shopping locally at independently owned shops and encourages our readers will do the same. It’s time to “think outside the [big] box” and start  (or continue to) shop locally. In 2009 a grassroots initiative called The 3/50 Project launched with the goal of saving local businesses. The 3/50 Project concept is simple:

1) Pick 3  stores in town that you would really miss if they were gone

2) Spend $50 per month in those 3 stores

3) Save your local economy

According to The 3/50 Project, for every $100 you spend in a locally owned independent store, $68 goes back into the local economy through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. If you take that same $100 and spend it at a national chain big box store, only $43 stays local. If you spend it online, $0 stays in your local economy.

For the next 12 days, Bethel Buzz will showcase a local, independently owned store where you can purchase unique gifts and help save your local economy at the same time.

Day 1: Byrd’s Books

Today we feature Byrd’s Books, located at 213 Greenwood Avenue, upstairs from Molten Java.

Byrd’s Books has a large selection of discounted books available as well and is a great place to do your holiday shopping on a budget.
