Area Christmas Tree Lightings Kick Off Holiday Season This Weekend

Now that we have had time to enjoy family and friends on Thanksgiving, many turn their attention to the holiday season of shopping, parties and of course tree lightings! Below you will find a list of local tree lightings and special events in the area to kick off the holiday season. If you would like your event posted, please email

Friday, Nov. 23:

BETHEL- Bethel Chamber of Commerce Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, 12-6pm, downtown Bethel.

12:00pm to 4:00pm – Horse Drawn Carriage Rides – The Gift Cottage Lawn, sponsored by Union Savings Bank, Greenwood Ave

1:00pm to 5:00 pm – Pictures with Santa at Aurora Photography, Greenwood Ave.

12:00 to 4:00pm – Free Soup donated by local businesses – served by Cub Scout Pack 156

12:00pm to 4:00pm – Shop Local Vendors – Located outside of the Bethel Chamber Office, Greenwood Ave.

12:00pm to 4:00pm – Bethel Chamber of Commerce Cider and Donuts – Sponsored by People’s Bank and Blue Jay Orchards

1:00pm to 4:00pm – Take Away Craft at Bethel Tutoring – while supplies last

1:30pm to 2:30pm – Children’s Story Hour – Byrd’s Books, Dolan Plaza

2:00pm to 4:30pm – Hot Cocoa served by the Bethel United Methodist Church, Greenwood Ave.

2:00pm to 4:30pm -Music by Griffin Anthony Band on PT Barnum Square

2:30pm to 4:30pm – Bethel High School Jazz and Tri M Students – Outside of Chamber Office

3:00 to 5:00pm – Join David Hyde Costello, author and illustrator of Little Pig Joins the Band, for an afternoon of stories, music, and fun at the Toy Room.

4:30pm – High School Choir – PT Barnum Square

4:30pm  to 6:00pm – Meet local Firefighters and climb aboard a Bethel Fire Truck – PT Barnum Square

5:00pm – Matt Knickerbocker to Kick – Off Tree Lighting Ceremony, PT Barnum Square

5:15pm – Santa Arrives on Fire Truck, PT Barnum Square

Saturday, Nov. 24:

DANBURY-  Downtown Tree Lighting, Library Plaza, Corner of Main and West St., Danbury, 5 pm.

10am-3pm- Holiday Bazaar at the Danbury Museum, 43 Main Street

3-4:30pm- Drop-in craft at the Danbury Library

5:15pm- Light the Lights, Library Plaza. Entertainment includes “Welcome from the Who’s,” presented by 5678 Dance Studio, St. James Church Carolers, and Regal Brass. Mayor Mark Boughton will lead the countdown to lighting Downtown’s tree lighting as Santa arrives by fire truck with the Beckerle Hose Company serving as his Reindeers.

6-7pm- Children visit Santa, Library Plaza

Sunday, Nov. 25:

NEW FAIRFIELD- New Fairfield Parks and Recreation First Annual Holiday Light Parade and Tree Lighting.

1-4pm Visit with Santa, Mrs. Claus, and their elves at the New Fairfield Library

4:30pm Holiday Light Parade

Following the parade everyone is invited to join Santa in lighting the tree on Memorial Field. Coffee will be provided by Starbucks, soup from 1st and Last Cafe, cookies and hot chocolate offered by the NF Parks & Recreation Commission. Friday, Nov. 30, Sat. Dec. 1, Sun. Dec. 2:

Wilton Conservatory of Dance presents The Nutcracker Ballet at the Wilton Playshop. Click here for more information and to purchase tickets.

Saturday, Dec. 1:

BROOKFIELD-  Brookfield Tree Lighting, 5:00p.m. Senior Center, Pocono Rd., Brookfield, 5:00pm

Brookfield kicks off the holiday season with the Brookfield Girl Scouts’  Annual Holiday Tree Lighting on Saturday, December 1 at 5:00p.m. the Brookfield Town Hall. The festivities  include caroling, a skit from Ultra Violet Theatre Troupe’s Whos from Whoville, refreshments and of course a visit with Santa.

Sunday, Dec. 2:

NEWTOWN- Hawleyville Tree Lighting, 5:00 p.m.

Hawleyville Post Office Plaza, 23 Barnabas Rd., Newtown (click here for a map). Join the Stony Hill Four Corners Association for their 3nd Annual Hawleyville Tree Lighting and Toy Drive! Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive courtesy of the Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Department. Holiday music will be provided by a local chorale. Bring a wrapped toy for the toy collection for Newtown Fund Drive. Mark age and gender on bottom of toy. Come sing holiday songs and enjoy holiday cheer!

Friday, Dec.7, 7:30pm, Sat. Dec.8, 6:00pm, Sun. Dec.9, 3:00pm:

The Danbury Symphony Orchestra presents The Nutcracker Ballet at Danbury High School, Clapboard Ridge Rd.. Local dancers from Danbury and surrounding towns will perform this classic holiday tale under the direction of Dody Flynn, owner of Dance Dimensions, LLC, Brookfield. Saturday, Dec. 15:

Gilleóghan Irish Dance presents an Irish Dance Holiday Spectacular! There will be two showings only at The Ridgefield Theatre Barn, 2:00 & 7:00p.m. Doors open one hour prior to showtime. Enjoy an evening of fun for the entire family.  Enjoy spectacular performances by the Gilleóghan School dancers with live music.  Don’t miss this very special holiday event!   Please note that early ticket sales will be limited to families of the dancers.  General sales begin at midnight on December 1st. Tickets are $22 each and can be purchased by clicking here.  Cabaret Seating: Guests are invited to bring food and beverage of choice to enjoy before the show.
