Social Services Requests Help for Kids’ Back-to-School Supplies

Social Services Requests Help for Kids’ Back-to-School Supplies

Back-to-School shopping for many include new clothes, backpacks, shoes, paper, binders, pens, highlighters and more pencils than students will ever use in a single school year. Each year students receive a list of required supplies needed for the first day of school but for families who are struggling financially, the pressure to meet the demands of back-to-school needs can be stressful. Director of Social Services Kathleen Gillen is putting a call out to the local community for your support to help our local families in need.

“We are requesting gift cards in any denomination from Wal-Mart, Target or Payless for back-to-school supplies– especially sneakers, backpacks and school supplies,” Gillen said.

Due to the current state of the economy, more families than every are requesting help and Social Services does not have enough supplies the demand.

“We have a whole lot more children this year asking for help than we have resources for. I used to use the help we received from the Salvation Army for sneakers, but they have cut back a great deal. I know that when I put in a request about gift cards for teenagers last Christmas in the Buzz, we got a lot of gift cards, so people obviously read it,” Gillen said.

“We really appreciate any help we can get from the community.”

So when you are doing your back-to-school shopping this summer, why not consider picking up a gift card to help a needy family in our community? Now, more than ever,  families need our help and any amount, no matter how small, can go a long way.

Gift cards can be dropped off, or mailed to, the Bethel Department Social Services, 1 School Street, Bethel, CT. 06801. In person drop-off hours are between the hours of 8:30a.m.-4:30p.m. If the director is not in her office gift cards may be dropped off in the First Selectman’s office during the same hours. For more information please contact Director of Social Services, Kathleen Gillen at (203) 794-8536 or email: gillenk@bethelct.gov
