Bethel Teen Plays For Vets at Sidewalk Sales on Saturday

Bethel teen Tristan Speed, a classically trained guitarist, will perform this Saturday July 21st, during the Bethel’s Summer Festival to raise funds for two veterans charities. Between 11:00a.m. and 2:00p.m. Tristan will be set up outside Private Studio Fitness at 120 Greenwood Ave., Bethel, collecting donations to benefit  The Mission Continues, an organization that supports veterans in doing service in their communities, and Operation Vet Fit,  a local charity to benefit veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Tristan, a home-schooled high school senior, has played classical guitar for over twelve years. His parents enrolled him in the Suzuki School in Newtown when he was just 4-years-old and he has been playing ever since. Using his talent to benefit others is something Tristan feels is a wonderful thing to do to help others.

“I was first inspired to help veterans after I read a book called, “The Heart and The Fist,” by Eric Greitens. In his book Greitens mentioned that after serving several years in the Navy Seals, he wanted to create an organization that helped wounded veterans contribute to their community, particularly if they had lost limbs or sustained other kinds of disabling wounds,” Tristan said.

“He chose to do this because many wounded veterans feel useless, as they can no longer serve their country on the battlefield. Through Greitens’ organization, The Mission Continues, wounded veterans can still contribute to their community, and can be seen as assets, not as burdens.”

Tristan said he was inspired by Greitens’ story and his charity and wanted to do something to help. Hearing about the Memorial Day 5K road race that Dan Gaita, founder of Operation Vet Fit and owner of Private Studio Fitness, put together in Bethel last May, Tristan approached him to see if he could perform in front of his gym during the Bethel Sidewalk Sales. After learning that Gaita had a service initiative – Operation Vet Fit – he wanted to help raise contributions for that effort as well.
