Training Workshop Offered on Palliative Care to Hospice

DANBURY, CT— Medical professionals and other professionals from all disciplines who might assist people of any age to deal with choices and options during advanced and serious illness are invited to a workshop, “Palliative Care to Hospice:  Options for Advanced Illness,” a train-the-trainer workshop offered by Regional Hospice and Home Care of Western CT.

The workshop is offered on three dates:

  • June 20, 2012 at Candlewood Valley Health and Rehab Center, New Milford, CT
  • September 11, 2012 at The Federation of Jewish Communities, Southbury, CT

It is appropriate for physicians, nurses, social workers and spiritual counselors/clergy.  The day’s topics will include an overview of palliative care and hospice, pain and symptom management, emotional response to illness, ethics and advance directives, spiritual and cultural influences in palliative and hospice care, and grief and loss.

“A wide range of professionals help patients and their loved ones in the face of advanced illness,” said Robin Viklund, clinical educator and quality assurance coordinator at Regional Hospice and Home Care of Western CT.  “We want to make sure they are knowledgeable about what they may encounter and are prepared to handle issues that arise with both patients and families.”

Application has been submitted to Danbury Hospital for nursing education contact hours.  Danbury Hospital is an Approved Provider of Continuing Nursing Education by the Connecticut Nurses Association, an Accredited Approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Centers Commission on Accreditation.  6 CEC have been approved by NASW CT Chapter for MSW.

Pre-registration is required.  The registration fee is $75, including lunch and 6 CEU.  This workshop is made possible with the assistance of a Cancer Partnership Grant from the Connecticut Department of Public Health in support of CT Cancer Plan, 2009 – 2013.
