On Dec. 7, 2011 the private 9/11 “Tree Flags” memorial to those died on September 11th, 2001 was vandalized. The American flag tribute is located at the home of Howard Lasher, 68 Dodgingtown Road, near the Bethel town line.

Mr. Lasher commissioned local artist David Merrill to create the American flag tribute, painted on six trees on his property in memory of those who lost their lives in the September 11th attacks in New York, Washington, D.C., and in Pennsylvania.

According to Newtown police, somebody threw acrylic craft paints on the artwork and smashed spotlights used to illuminate the landmark at night. The incident occurred sometime between 3:00 p.m. on December 6 and 7:30 a.m. on December 7. Although the vandalism took place on the 70th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day and 10 years after the September 11th terrorist attacks, Mr. Lasher said he thinks it was “just a coincidence.”

“I honestly don’t think there was any significance as to the December 7th date.  That’s just a coincidence. I am shocked that anyone would desecrate a site that has such meaning, one that has been seen by 10,000 plus people and commissioned in honor and memory of those lost on 9/11 and all the war’s in defense of our great country,” Lasher said.

“It is heartbreaking and done by cruel and heartless persons who will eventually be caught and prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” Lasher said.

It’s been over a week since the vandalism and the police are seeking clues as to who is responsible. Mr. Lasher said Thursday: “The Police are working on the case but it’s a very difficult case to break. There were no witnesses and it was done in pitch darkness.”

Lasher thinks most likely it was kids and said: “Unless they brag to their friends about what has occurred it’s doubtful they will be caught.” He called the vandalism ”Disgraceful.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Newtown Police Detective Division at 203-426-5841.
