Kid-Friendly Halloween Happenings & Alternatives

As we reach mid-October, it’s hard to deny that Halloween is coming. Skeletons hang from trees, tombstones with zombie limbs poke up out of lawns and mummified creatures stand ominously in the yards of your neighbors. For some this can be fun, but to small children it can be terrifying. Below are some kid-friendly, non-scary events and Halloween alternatives that are sure to yield lots of treats (with no tricks!).

~Free Halloween Puppet Show, Bethel Public Library

Free puppet show with Ultra Violet Puppets, cupcakes & photos with the puppets after. Space is limited.

~Light the Night (Halloween alternative)

Saturday, October 29, 2-4:00 p.m., Greenwood Ave., P.T. Barnum Square, Bethel

The day will start out at 1:00 p.m. at 1 School Street for a show with Curious Creatures. After the show kids can walk up and down Greenwood Ave. where merchants hand out free candy and other goodies. A costume contest will take place on the lawn of the library at 4:00p.m. where prizes will be given out for best costume.

First 100 kids to come in costumer will receive a goody bag, $7 adults, $5 children, $5 seniors, $20 family.

  • Hay Rides on October Weekends and Holidays

    Date: Sat, 10/01/2011 – 12:00pm – Mon, 10/31/2011 – 3:00pm

    Harvest Hay Rides are ongoing every weekend in October as well as on school holidays from Noon to 3:00 P.M. Rides begin at the W.O.L.F. Cabin and are $2 each.

  • Zoo Tots

    Date: Tue, 10/11/2011 – 10:30am – 11:15am, Wed, 10/12/2011 – 10:30am – 11:15am

    This monthly 45-minute program for children 22 months to four years old, who are accompanied by an adult, may include stories, activities, crafts, and live animals. This session is entitled “Not So Scary!” Pre-registration is required by calling 203-394-6563. The cost is $10 for Zoo members and one child, and $15 for non-members and one child.

  • Howl-O-Ween at Beardsley Zoo

    Date: Fri, 10/21/2011 – 6:30pm – 10:00pm, Sat, 10/22/2011 – 6:30pm – 10:00pm

    Calling all ghosts and goblins! Come and spend a truly fun and frightful evening at the Zoo featuring a “Fairy Tales Gone Wrong” Hayride, Haunted Farmyard, Gruesome Greenhouse, and magic show by Jim Sisti. Tickets also include FREE face painting, and of course, TREATS! Don’t miss this frighteningly good time! Admission is $8 per person. Event recommended for children ages 6-12, however, some of the “scarier” activities of the evening may be better suited for children ages 8+
