Bethel Democrats officially choose candidates for the next election at the Democratic caucus Thursday night at the Senior Center. Current First Selectman Matthew Knickerbocker
did not have any challengers at the caucus.
First Selectman Knickerbocker and Selectman Richard Straiton announced their plans to run last week and were unanimously endorsed by the Democratic party.
“It was a happy caucus and all votes were unanimous to accept the entire slate,” Knickerbocker said.
“I am honored to accept the endorsement and I’m looking foward to running with my team mate Rich. We have worked very hard and there is still a lot to do.”
Town Clerk Lisa Bergh said they don’t have an official list of candidates until the Democrats certify their list to her on July 27.
Christopher McCollum and Antonio Fernades will run for the two upcoming vacancies on the Police Commission.
The Bethel Republicans will hold their caucus on Monday, July 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bethel Middle School auditorium. Former Democrat Kevin Cleary was endorsed by the Republican Town Committee as candidate for First Selectman. Former First Selectman Robert Burke is expected to challenge Cleary at the Republican caucus.
