Extreme Heat Forces Immaculate Graduation To Relocate To St. Mary’s

Some like it hot…. and others? Not so much, especially while wearing a cap, gown, shirt and tie.

Due to the extreme heat forecast for tomorrow (96 degrees according to weather.com) Immaculate High School’s graduation ceremonies have been moved to Bethel’s St. Mary’s parish located at 24 Dodgingtown Road.

President of IHS, Kathleen Casey, said “We’ve spent the day today doing everything we can to make sure we have a good, healthy environment for students and their families.”

“St. Mary’s is a nice air-conditioned facility. We were going to originally have it in our gym but it would be too hot so we decided to move it,” she said.

Parents and students were notified of the change via email and Facebook.

St. Mary’s Church is part of the Diocese of Bridgeport, Immaculate’s sister church. IHS’s 80 students will receive their high school diplomas tomorrow evening. Many of the graduates of the Class of 2011 are going on to notable schools such as Notre Dame, Boston College, Vassar, Wellesley, and UCONN.

Valedictorian Mike Matthews from Danbury will be the commencement speaker.  Bishop Lori Mayor Mark Boughton, Dr. Margaret Dames, and many others will be in attendance at the graduation on Wednesday, June 8 at 7:00 p.m.
